How to Prepare your Kid for a Fishing Trip

Preparing your child for their first fishing trip can be exciting, especially if fishing with your dad was one of your favorite pastimes. Carefully planning your vacation can make all the difference in ensuring you and your child will enjoy this time together. If you’re struggling to figure out how to properly prep your little one before the big trip, here are a few helpful suggestions.

Cast Out the Idea

Before you plan your next fishing trip with the kids, you’ll want to see if fishing piques their interest. When you bring up the topic, do they seem excited? If your child doesn’t seem enthralled, take them to where you store the fishing gear and explain the different types of bait they can use to see if they react with curiosity.

Get ‘em Hooked

If you live near water, take your son or daughter to visit the nearest pond, lake or fishing hole and try to spot the fish. This builds anticipation, and gives your child something to look forward to. You can also chat about the different species you’re likely to catch.

Practice Makes Perfect

It’s important to have your child practice casting a fishing rod a few times before you head out on a fishing trip together. You can practice anywhere; just make sure to leave the hook off when they’re just starting out, to avoid injuries.

Settle on a Place to Anchor

Having trouble deciding where to go? Lake Powell, Lake Mead, and Lake Mohave offer fantastic fishing all year long. Keep in mind you don’t have to settle for a tiny fishing boat where you’ll only spend half a day out on the water. Upgrade by renting a houseboat at one of our marinas for a multi-day experience you and your child will remember for the rest your lives.

Plan Accordingly

Research the fishing requirements and obtain a fishing license in the state you plan to visit before you set out on your excursion. Depending on the age of your children, you may have to purchase additional fishing licenses for them as well. Save yourself the headache and purchase your fishing license online ahead of time. Also, you’ll want to pack a variety of clothing options such as t-shirts, long sleeves, wind breakers, sweatshirts, and pants to keep your skin protected and warm if you’re visiting the lake in the cooler months.

Discuss Water Safety

It’s important to help your children stay safe around the water. Ensure they don’t come too close to the edge of the boat, always wear a life vest, and practice precautions when casting their rods. As a parent, it’s important to keep a close eye on your child no matter how young or old they are to make sure everyone has a safe, enjoyable time.
