Cottonwood Cove | Things To Do With Kids at Lake Mohave

Category: Blog Things to do

There is nothing quite like spending some time with the kiddos in nature on a family vacation. One of the best places to visit and explore the great outdoors is Lake Mohave. At Cottonwood Cove Resort and Marina, we like to recommend these activities to visitors with kids of all ages.

Enjoy a Boat Ride or Even a Houseboat

Renting a houseboat for the weekend (or week!) is always a hit with kids young and old. This is a fantastic way to allow the kids to experience something new and exciting. Everyone will get to eat, sleep and play right there on the boat. There is no doubt this is going to be a better experience than any hotel stay nearby. Take a look at our fleet of houseboats, suitable for families of all sizes.

Not ready to rent a houseboat just yet? That’s alright. Cottonwood Cove has plenty of other watercraft available to rent. There’s also an RV park here if you are looking for a place to park your RV while you spend some time on the water.

Check Out the National Park Service

Another type of experience that reinforces a love of nature is spending time within the National Parks Service. The kids will love having the ability to be outside, engaging with nature. This is a great way to build your family into a team while also creating opportunities to learn about the world around them.

One of the ways this can be fun is to check out the National Park Service Web Rangers program. It is an interesting way to learn about nature right online. The kids will love having some fun with this once they arrive at Lake Mohave as well.

Consider the Benefits of Fishing

While you are enjoying time at the marina (or on your houseboat), why not take advantage of the fish here. The lake is teeming with various fish to catch. Perhaps you and one of your children needs some extra bonding time. Get up early one morning and have some fun fishing on the lake. You may not need a lot of experience, and you do not have to spend a lot of money on equipment to really reap its benefits.

You can find all of the fishing gear you need nearby – both for rental or for purchase. Be prepared to find yourself fishing for hours. On a cool fall morning or afternoon, this can be an excellent way to unwind and spend some quality time together.

Check Out Hoover Dam

If you have never visited Hoover Dam, it is a sight you should see. The facilities are open daily, depending on restrictions. There is a Visitor Center with numerous exhibits to check out. If you have kids that are a bit older, they will appreciate learning about this incredible location, including the power that is behind it. There are a number of things to explore here that are right for the whole family.

  • Take a tour through the Visitors Center
  • Check out the Memorial Bridge Plaza and Walkway
  • View the outdoor areas to see the surrounding beauty and nature
  • Explore the Historic Railroad trail
  • Gift shops, cafes, and restrooms are available for you as you need them

We do recommend taking the time to check out the website listed above. The dam may have a unique operating schedule. You want to be able to plan when to visit based on what is available at that time.

Check Out the Laughlin River Tours

Another interesting experience that kids may appreciate is a tour of the area by boat. The Laughlin River tours are a good way to see the layout of the Colorado River. There are various companies that offer these types of boat tours. What’s most important here is to book one in advance. They can sell out quickly, especially if there are restrictions on them. Many people love these boat tours so much so – and the beauty of the river itself – that they even host events on these rivers. From a slow-moving scenic tour to spending some time on a faster-paced boat, you will love this type of tour, and so will the kids.

Why Not Just Go for a Hike?

Another way to take in this area in a truly meaningful manner is to go for a hike. That sounds so simple but the area has so much to offer when you do. You will find a wide range of beautiful sights along the route. Best of all, there are nature trails and paths already carved out for you. The experience can be rather easy.

You never know what you will find on a hike around Lake Mohave. However, there are a few things to check out or look for while you do so. For example, you are sure to find ancient Indian Petra-glyph around the path. You may also find a wide range of trees, wildlife habitats, and of course the animals themselves. Try to time your hike around sunset to really experience the beauty that the lake has to offer.

Check Out the Local Sites and Experiences

If you are spending some time near the marina, you’ll want to check out all there is to do around the area. Depending on when you plan to visit as well as what interests you (and the age of your family members) these are some of the local activities to check out.

  • Explore Nelson’s Landing. Located about 25 miles from Boulder City and 16 miles north of Cottonwood Cove by water, this area boasts stunning canyon views that will leave you breathless.
  • Laughlin Stone Labyrinths: This is another fantastic experience that may be best for family members.  There are nine stone mazes in the area that are quite interesting.
  • Visit the Eldorado Canyon Mine Tours: Depending on the time of year, you can explore these mine tours. This is in the Techatticup Mine. It is one of the oldest and richest in the region.
